Mi Designer Styling - Kids Bedroom makeover

I gave the children's bedroom a mini makeover recently. For less than $160 I was able to totally transform the shared bedroom of Master 7 and Miss 4.

I found these terrific doona covers from Target, both with a simple line drawing of two of the best cities in the Europe, Paris and London.

The doona covers were a double, as I wanted them to hang well over the edge of the bed.

I had a lampshade made to match the doona covers with the second pillowcase from each of the sets, just to give the room a little more of a coordinated feel.

Cheers

The History of the Apron

A couple of weeks ago some girlfriends and I were on a family holiday in Mudgee, rural New South Wales.
In a lovely little shop called The Parcel Room pinned to the wall we all read and were touched by the following

The History of the Apron
Grandma’s apron was to protect the dress underneath, because she only had a few.
It was easier to wash aprons than dresses and they used less material, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.
It was wonderful for drying children’s tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.
From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.
When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.
And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms.
Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.
Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.
From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables.
After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.
In the autumn, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.
When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.
When dinner was ready, grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the paddocks to dinner.
It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that ‘old-time apron’ that served so many purposes.
Remember, grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool.
Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw. They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron.
I don’t think I ever caught anything from an apron but love.
Source unknown.

Wear yours with love and share the joy of the Apron with your daughters & sons.

My two scallywags Baxter & Eliza have always worn their aprons whenever helping out in the kitchen.
I've certainly wiped my fair share of tears and chocolate stained faces with my aprons.
I hope they will continue the love of the apron when they move out of home and have their own families.

Cheers and thanks for stopping by,

Sarah

Amy Butler

For those Amy Butler fans out there, here is an interview with the sweet gal herself.

She is talking about one of her most recent books.

Her fabric designs are divine, her garden is her inspiration and once you see the pictures you'll understand why.

To check out all her amazing designs go to her website..... you'll wish we had a shop that stocked all her stuff here!

Next on my hit list will be this rug the "Coventry"

Amy will also be appearing in my office..... probably in a wallpaper....

Here is a photo from a couple of years ago when I was lucky enough to meet her on a trip out to Australia, Pictured here with a fellow stitcher Nicole.

Update your hardware....

I got these cute door knobs from Zara Home when I was in Abu Dhabi earlier this year....
numbers 1 through to 6.

I had planned to put them on a wardrobe that I use in my workroom...however a lucky "road side" find last week found them with a new home....

I found two of these three draws units....yes they need a sand and a paint...I'll get around to that....

Only took a couple of minutes to swap the knobs over.... it may take a lot longer for me to get around to painting them.....

I'm thinking charcoal to go with my new blind in Florence Broadhurst's Egrets ....eta 4 weeks away!

Want open shelving in your kitchen?

Here's a clever idea..... to achieve that loft style "open shelving" in your kitchen simply remove the doors off your cupboards.

Easy peezy and done in a couple of minutes.

For a professional finish you might need to repaint the cupboard frames and fill in the hinge screw holes.

Another suggestion would be to either paint the internals of the cupboard in a contrasting colour or use a great wallpaper to line them.

Design options are endless and totally up to you!

Eco Cups

Since getting a Nespresso machine for Christmas there has been a fair amount of coffee being drunk in this house!

In 30 secs you have a short black...... as a busy working mother, 30 secs is the usual amount of spare time I ever have...so getting my caffeine hit that fast is great.

So heading off to client appointments over the bridge in the morning I like to take a coffee with me in the car.
I have been looking at the ceramic takeaway coffee mugs for a couple of weeks now.....reason I hadn't purchased because most of them were either ugly or just plain boring.

Personally I wasn't looking for designs with animal prints or brightly colour geometric patterns.

Porcelain Eco Cup or travel mug

I just wanted something simple, stylish and big enough to hold a double shot!

So hooray....I found it today...actually I found 3...I couldn't decide what colour to get so I choose 3 out of the 6 colour ways.

I'm happy with my mug, I've road tested it already...had a hot chocolate tonight while blogging and its great - huge, its perfect.

The red one is going to be my favourite I can tell! Red is one of my favourite colours!

Now of course had I have found these "Destination" Designs today I'd have grabbed Paris for sure...... love Paris......!

Cupcakes for the Princess in your life

My very clever friend Bronwyn made these gorgeous cupcake Tiaras......

With two boys she doesn't get to explore her feminine side that often......so as the proud mother of Eliza I was lucky enough to be offered these stunning "cupcake toppers" when she turned 4 recently.

To create these tiara toppers for the princess in your life, click here.

I'll load some pics of the party soon.

My kids LOVE Charlie & Lola

My kids love Charlie and Lola, the cartoon and the books, by the talented Lauren Child.

The designer in me loves the animations by Lauren, her use of coloured papers and collage is just brilliant.

Her animations are basically paper cuts. Its such a clever idea.

The opening titles inspired me to start this quilting project for the Charlie (Baxter, 7) and Lola (Eliza, 4) in my life...

I'll post another  picture when its completed......

Thursday Nights....The Greenwich Sewing Room

Most Thursday nights my sewing room comes alive with the chatter and busy hands of some like minded talented craft women.
After the children have gone to bed these women come over with their projects in hand to get a few undisturbed hours of sewing (or gossiping) done.....no husbands, no children....(except for mine who sneak peaks around the door way to see who has come this week).
Its a revolving door of visitors, some women are here every week and others drop by occasionally.
Cups of tea, wine & chocolate keep us sewing and chatting until close to midnight.
I love my Thursday nights, its a chance for "show and tell" to be inspired by each others projects and progress, its encouraging, its educational, its entertaining and its supportive.
Some people have book club...I have "Stitch and B*tch".... my week isn't complete with out my Thursday night "hit" and catch up.
Thank you Sam, Caroline and Bronwyn.......
